Re: Art in the Library Gala Openings
The North Olympic Library System will kick off a collaborative library/community art project in early June, with gala opening events at both the Sequim and Port Angeles libraries. These first-time-ever Art in the Library receptions will coincide with Sequim’s First Friday ArtWalk on Friday, June 4, and Port Angeles’ Second Weekend Art Event on Friday, June 11. Both libraries will be open for artistic viewing “after hours,” from 5pm until 8pm. The work of several local artists will be on display, and refreshments will be served. The PAHS Jazz Combo will provide live music from 5:30 – 7:30pm. The invaluable contributions of Library volunteers, and Friends of the Library, will be recognized in a program at 6:30pm. Limited library services will be available during the after-hours event.
These opening receptions celebrate the first installation of ongoing rotating art exhibits in the Port Angeles and Sequim libraries. The summer Art in the Library exhibits feature works by the following local artists: at the Port Angeles Main Library - Dee Green, Elaine Lennox, Donna Standerwick, Linda Holt, Paul Labrie, Duncan Yves McKiernan, The Pacific Northwest Wood Artisans; and at the Sequim Branch Library - Sallie Radock. Library exhibits will remain on display for approximately three months. The autumn Art in the Library show will open in early September.
The Art in the Library program has been made possible by generous contributions from the Port
Angeles Friends of the Library and the Friends of the Sequim Library, and also by the efforts of volunteer art coordinators in each community, who schedule the artists and design the displays. “The Library is very excited to have the opportunity to become involved in the community art scene, and to showcase the work of our talented local artists,” said Margaret Jakubcin, Assistant Library Director. “This program is an excellent example of the exciting things that can result when Library, Friends, volunteers, and community join forces. The Art in the Library opening receptions seemed like the perfect occasions to recognize and celebrate the valuable contribution that Library volunteers make - both to the Library and to the community.”
Randy Radock, local artist, and coordinator of the Sequim Branch Art in the Library show, added, “Everyone I’ve talked to thinks this is an absolutely great opportunity for local artists to share their work with their community.”
The Sequim Branch Library is located at 630 N. Sequim Ave in Sequim. The Port Angeles Main Library is located at 2210 S. Peabody in Port Angeles. For more information, contact Margaret Jakubcin, Assistant Director, at 360.417.8505 or

The Story People of Clallam County is a registered 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, organized as a Guild in 1992 to promote the art of storytelling on the Olympic Peninsula. The Story People believe that stories are an invaluable treasure of every culture because they represent and pass along the collective folklore and wisdom of the ages. The Guild sponsors a monthly story swap in the Raymond Carver Room at the Port Angeles Library. All attendees, local residents as well as visitors, are welcome to share a story, poem, or even a song just for the fun of it, or to improve storytelling techniques. Many people come only to listen, and they represent a very important aspect of this event that is open to the general public and offered at no cost. For those interested in further development as tellers, the Guild offers periodic workshops that are led by experienced professional tellers. Members volunteer regularly in area schools, promoting literacy through storytelling.
